Fun with Felt

I love the feltboard. The possibilities with these things are limitless. Prepackaged felt sets costs almost an arm and a leg. So I made our own with a bulletin board I got off Freecycle and felt I got at the fabric store. I just hot glued the felt to the board. You can cut out various activities and objects from the felt and sort them in their own bags. A particular favorite of ours is the Funny Faces felt set. 

Reuse Them Crayons!

Happy Valentine's Day! Ever wonder what to do with the millions of broken crayons you've accumulated? We have quite a few too. I seem to have a knack for breaking one every time I color with my kids. Here's an idea. Make new crayons!

Zoe made some as party favors for her third birthday.

 

Now she is making them as Valentines for her Kindergarten class.

Before I get any fingers wagged in my direction, yes I know how particularly sugar-laden cupcakes are. I would like to add that this is a sometimes treat, but one that I think is particularly good for the soul. So we made them. And we made them good.

Make a Music Rainbow

 Zoe's been singing Do-Re-Mi from The Sound of Music a lot lately so we decided to try to make our own music scale with glass jars and water.

We added food coloring to pretty it up a bit.

Then it went from a music lesson to a color lesson! We put the jars in order of the rainbow.

And identified the three primary colors.

And did color equations! Yellow + Blue = Green!

Red+Blue= Purple!

I Can!

Can't is a word I'm trying to eliminate from, not only my vocabulary, but also my children's. I want my darlings to know that they CAN do anything with determination, love, and faith. So Zoe and I created "I Can" books yesterday. We started with a little survey revealing some things that Zoe can do. This helped get her and I thinking about what we might include in our books. Then we drew pictures on each page of things we can do. When either of us begins to feel a little negativity about our abilities this is something we can refer to in helping us bring back some positive energy.

I cut computer paper in half and stapled three sheets together down the fold.

You could easily create your own.

The Incredible Shrinking Bottle

What do you get when you fill a plastic 2 liter bottle with hot water? A really neat science experiment!

All you need is an empty 2 liter bottle and some hot water. You fill the bottle halfway, shake the bottle, and watch it shrink over the next 5 minutes.

We started with a two liter bottle and heated enough water to fill the bottle halfway.

The moment the hot water touched the bottle it started to shrink! The kids thought this was really neat.

All in all, the bottle shrunk to nearly the size of an individual soda bottle.
